Only 5 days left?! Whaaa?!!

Where has the time gone? Seems only yesterday we arrived in Melbourne and only a few months ago when we were here for the Australian Open in Jaunary! I've learnt many things on my adventure but one of the biggest and most cliche realisations is how quick time really does go. But its taught me to make the most of everything and add value to my time and experiences even more. True, but even more cliche!

So as usual I'll carry on from the last post in giving you a summary of the highlights of what we've done since then. Ill start with...this...

SNOW SNOW SNOW!

Yep yep while all you guys and girls have been basking in the summer sun back home (before the weather started to change, as I hear) Tom and I were basking in the Australian winter sun in the snowy mountains!
We were lucky enough to go with our friends Kristian and John and drove just to the edge of where the mountainous regions are in Victoria - a place called Lake Mountain - so only an hour and a half's journey! It seemed longer than it was though, as we listened to two songs from the Frozen CD soundtrack on repeat the whole way there courtesy of Kristian!
Kristian hadn't seen snow for over ten years and needless to say when he did see it he went completely doolaley and managed to take about 30+ pictures with snapchats and insta's before we'd even drove up the mountain to the resort. It was all very comical for us as you can imagine.

Lake Mountain is a family sledging and tobaggon resort - no ski runs or lifts, although you can do cross country ski. We looked into going skiing but unfortunately would have worked out way too expensive. It would have been a further drive into the mountains to a proper ski resort too.

We had a great day with loads of fun and laughs. Going headfirst, surfing and crashing into each other on sledges and of course building the best and biggest snowman in the whole resort, sparking a competitive streak from fellow snow architects and a whole load of attention from astonished children and Asian tourists.
Kristian wanted to name him Olaf from the Frozen film but we don't do things by halfs and this snowman actually finished up more similar in size to Hagrid from Harry Potter.

Here he is! This picture makes me laugh. Not sure why Krisitan put the arms there but they should be on the ball underneath the head!

Some pics from when I went off exploring...beautiful surroundings. Completely forgot we were in Austrlalia! 40cm deep snow if you go "off piste"

Kristians friend John is an ex lecturer and senior staff member at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Tecnhology (RMIT) - actually the university I considered applying to when my family and I were thinking about emigrating here all those years ago.
He kindly offered to take time out of his schedule to give us a private tour of the department buildings. He's lived in Melbourne all his life and worked at the university for almost 30 years so he knew nearly all its history and trivia. Was a great afternoon and really enjoyed seeing the buildings and studios where the Aussie students study. Here's a few pics from the rooftop of Building 100 - Architectural Research Facility...

And here's a few of my fave pics from when I've been wandering round the city...

SYDNEY!!!

As we planned, we were lucky enough to go on a little holiday to Sydney one last time before coming home. Checked into the hostel I knew in Kings Cross and nothing had changed. Nice little friendly place but weird to go back in to that environment after living in a city centre apartment for the last month. Only took 10 minutes in the kitchen to get sick of hearing all the drab dull Brits talking over all their travel stories and one night stands. Stay classy, girls.

I won't bombard everyone with pics of Sydney. There's plenty of pics on here already. But here's a few special ones of one of our favourite places to chill out and relax...or jump of a cliff!

We had a good day climbing on the rocks and getting some cool pictures as you can see. Great picnic spot hah. So this was all on the first day. Our second and third days in Sydney were spent walking around the city... darling harbour, circular quay, botanic gardens etc and visiting a couple of musuems.
We were also able to go and see the guys where we used to work; Tom went for drinks with his mates from Pottery Barn and I hung out with Peter and Marina in the store for a bit (Peter has taken an interest in cocktail making and made us piƱa coladas haha) then we went out and had drinks and food in Bondi. Had a good laugh and a fun night. First time I managed to stay sober while out with them.
Picked up our watches from the store too and they're looking great! Really happy with them.

Couldn't resist another snap with these two in circular quay!

And I just really like this picture of the opera bar so had to post :)

In the time we've been living here in the apartment we've got really pally with our Korean flatmates.
They are some of the nicest, funniest and generous people we've met in Australia and we're sad to be leaving them soon. They've made us awesome food, been really friendly and entertaining, constantly made us laugh as they tell us hilarious stories in broken English and are very humble and genuine people.

In return, we've been helping them improve their English - sometimes in very funny ways - and we made them this classic English masterpiece below. Of course, the infamous Full English Breakfast. It had everything! Minus the black pudding (couldn't find it anywhere here). It was a great effort and tasted delicious.

They really enjoyed it. More importantly, they survived. As we weren't sure how well they'd cope with the unusally high (for them) level of saturated fat and grease that was leaking out of it!!! They were very grateful and liked the food, as well as being initially perplexed as to why us British eat so much for breakfast! Even got them drinking Yorkshire Tea with it too!

In other news I was extremely lucky to come across an event run by the Design Insititue of Australia where every year they allow students and graduates to come and gain an insight in to how Australian design practices work within the creative industries. The event is called Emerging Designers Inside Nights. Participating studios open up their doors and give presentations on how they work and what they do. It's a great idea and gives graduates like me a chance to get a welcome foot in the door and speak in person with the managers and directors about potential employment opportunities.

I chose to see a presentation by Hirsch Bedner Assocaties - they are the biggest global name in the hospitality design industry right now and delivered a great presentation. Seems like a fun company to work for with a lot of collabortation between design disciplines, working on some huge projects. I managed to get a follow up meeting with the MD next week regarding future openings within the company! Very nervous but fingers crossed it might lead to something big, who knows.

And lastly, some tennis!!!
Last week I discovered an online voucher offering a big saving on court hire at the National Tennis Centre so I booked Tom and I on to a court today for a bit of a hit and a laugh.
The centre is just across from Rod Laver Arena, which was completely open to public - unlike Wimbledon. It was a great experience walking into the buildings, corridors and areas where the players usually go and so nice to play on the famous Australian Open hard courts.
Brought back memories of the tournament in January, and also when I came here with my family on holiday in 2007. Could still remember the court I had a little hit on all those years ago, before security found me!

The National Tennis Centre here has great new state of the art facilities and it wasn't busy today either. We played a match and larked about for a bit in what was really hot weather again today despite being the middle of winter. As you can see from the pics below, it was a great day to play.
Didn't see anyone famous lurking around. I think all the players are in Toronto or Cincinnati this time of year.

As usual Tom resorted to anger and violence when he got beat fair and square at something!

So that's it for now! Time to make the most of these last 5 days in Australia.
Will post again soon. Take it easy.

Melbourne Update

Hello again and here is an update especially for you of what's been going on in Melbourne since the last post, after we arrived from Tasmania.
We had a great first two weeks in Melbourne, fortunately booking in to one the best hostels we've stayed in on our first night in the city. Great location and facilities so we booked a couple of weeks there.
We were out and about the city most of the first week - proudly sporting our backpacker shorts and T-shirts, much to the disbelief of shivering Aussies - familiarising ourselves with the streets, lane ways and arcades.
We had some fun nights out with our friend Kristian who lives in the popular Melbourne suburb of Prahran, exploring the main shopping street and eating out at various cafes and restaurants.
You might remember I explained how Tom was planning a hiking trip after the first week where he would attempt to walk the Australian Alps Walking Track. Well unfortunately after splashing out on all the equipment and very expensive dried food supplies in the second week he returned to Melbourne on the train after lasting 5 or so days into the hike. Which was still quite a good effort really. But, in his own words to me, "Man I've lost all enthusiasm for this. Not how I want to spend my last month alone. Gonna come back to Melbourne." The phrase 'hate to say I told you so' came to mind. But I was just glad he was back and had realised that it was much more important to make sure he enjoys his last few weeks here and not be on his own. Two hikers died somewhere along the same track after coming in to difficulty as well! The conditions were pretty bad, although he didn't get far enough to encounter any snow.
Here he is outside his accommodation for the first night before embarking on the walk

Continuing the topic of accommodation... after another week of hostel accommodation after his walk Tom came across an ad for a flat-share in a city centre apartment overlooking the CBD so now we are lucky to be living in a place with views like this from the 19th floor, with some cool and funny flatmates too. And it's pretty cheap doing it this way too considering what you get for your $.
Gym, pool, jacuzzi, sauna, unlimited WiFi all included!

The climate conditions here in the city have been trademark Melbourne of course. For those of you who don't know about or haven't heard of Melbourne's frequently changing weather patterns the weather here is unpredictable to say the least. As I'm typing it looks like its another beautiful Aussie winter day, sunny and pretty mild, but today accompanied by what sounds like very strong winds which are constantly howling past the window.

I'm just waiting to hear a huge crashing sound of some scaffolding or rooftop objects being blown off of the high rise buildings.
There have been plenty of amazingly sunny winter days with crisp mild t-shirt-inducing weather. But like I said, the weather here is very unpredictable, so much so that the weather can change dramatically within the hour - due to Melbourne's geographical location - and up to four or five times in one single day, as we have experienced. This has led to one of Melbourne's catchphrases... "experience all four seasons in one day". Literally.
The Melbournites are more than used to it and use the layering technique to great effect but we on the other hand - who are way too cool and proud to carry around extra layers - have been caught out many a time wearing t-shirts and shorts in sunny morning weather and have come back to the room drenched or freezing cold in the afternoon. And vice versa, coming back sweating buckets! Not nice. It's all part of the fun though.
In general though, winter here in Melbourne has been really quite nice so far. Never have we been so cold we've been shivering or cowering in a warm lobby entrance. It's always been mild and comfortable. And if it starts to get uncomfortable you can bet the climate will change within a couple of hours anyway.
We did of course invest in some jeans and a jacket though which have been needed on some occasions. It also hasn't rained much at all thankfully so hopefully that will stay the case right up until we leave.

Moving on... Now that the partner in crime was back in the big city after the short lived adventure we had plenty of time to get out and do some backpacker sightseeing. On a budget though unfortunately. We applied for a few jobs last week and in the end I turned down an interview at an outlet store as by that time we only had a total of 4 weeks left in the country. What was the point. We could do with the extra money but I wasn't enthused about having to lie my way through the interview and deal with the hassle of taking on and learning a new job for such a short time, then tell them I'm quitting. And it was casual as well.
We are okay for money and have enough to last but we just can't do some of things we really want to do. Things like paying for big entry fees, transport costs to outlying areas of Melbourne, eating out at nice restaurants and going to expensive nightclubs have put us off. However we have managed to get out and make the most of the free or less expensive things and some of the highlights so far have been... in no particular order:
* Wandering and larking around the botanical gardens.
* Outlet shopping and visiting the famous markets.
* Checking out famous buildings, galleries and museums.
* Going to awesome nightclubs and not drinking as we refuse to pay ridiculous prices for booze. And in doing so proved you can have the best nights without drinking!
* City tours and exploring the famous graffiti lined streets.
* Seeing the colony of penguins at St Kilda beach.
* Festivals, shopping and restaurants in Melbourne's hip and cultural suburbs such as Fitzroy, Carlton and South Yarra. Very cool.

And some design related highlights:

* Blagged my way in to a trade only design show at Melbourne Convention Centre.
* Open House Melbourne.
* Booked on to a couple of graduate networking events at two of my favourite studios
* Business card missions... Searching, tracking down, knocking on doors and blagging my way in to some of my favourite studios like a design ninja.
Ive been hoping to try and manufacture a two week internship from them which would be ideal or even better an offer of long term employement in the future. But time is running out and it's looking less likely now, despite a couple of interested design directors who are I guess too busy to sort something out in time. Their loss, since I have been offering myself for free.

With our remaining funds we also managed to book cheap flights to Sydney for a few days which was a big one on our to do list. We couldn't grumble at $90 return to Melbourne. We fly Wednesday next week (6th August) for three nights where we'll hopefully stay at a hostel in Kings Cross where I stayed a few nights after the farm work training course back in March.
Looking forward to seeing a few things we missed out on last time and of course picking up our Christmas presents which have been patiently waiting all this time in Georg Jensen Bondi Junction. I will hopefully go for a drink with my ex boss Peter if there's time.

Here's a few of my favourite pictures I've taken from when we've been out and about in Melbourne. Plenty more places we need to visit to see and get pictures. We are planning to go out one evening and get some illuminated city shots at night as well.

So I'm sure you get the idea about why we love Melbourne anyway. It has only made us realise more how much we'd like to come back and live here when we use our second year visas. These have been just a few of the highlights so far and I'll post another Melbourne update, along with some other posts, in a couple of weeks before flying home.
