Sold the Van, Centennial Park, Celebrity Spotting, Surfing and Fun Nights Out!

Cant beleive its taken me so long to write this post! Theres been a lot of exciting stuff to write about so I've had to split this latest post into two parts.

So yes the last few weeks have been very eventful indeed. Of highest importance has been the successful selling of Olivia - our sexy campervan, who was beginning to become a bit of a burden unfortunately. After a few interested parties we were contacted by a man who had just returned to Aus from Hawaii and was looking for a van to go on a road trip back to where he lives (in Perth). He was truly a blessing in disguise, and the solution to all of our van related problems.
You see, amongst other things (wont go into it here) we'd been having lots of trouble with the registration (Rego). Like tax in the UK, all vehicles have to be re-registered every year but they have to be registered using a residential address from the state they are licenced in (something we were unaware of when we bought Olivia, who was licenced in Western Australia). Since we could not give identification with a WA address and the Rego was up for renewal in February it meant we either had to re-register the van in this state (NSW) which is a lengthy and very costly process... Or try and reverse the sale of the van back to the people we bought it off and let them deal with it (you don't have to 'own' the van / have it registered in your name to be able to sell it). Anyway, cutting a long story short, it just so happened that this guy who was interested lives in Western Australia...meaning he could re-register it using his Western Australia address. And luckily he was wanting to set off ASAP which was just as well seeing as it only had a week left on it before the Rego expired. Hallelujah!
So in the end we sold it for $1000 less than what we paid for it, meaning that for we travelled the East Coast in our own wheels, on our own accord, in our own time for $500 each which is pretty damn good considering the outrageous costs of renting. We would have got more for it but we had it serviced and paid $650 to get it in top notch condition which helped sell it in the end.
So we are van free again and I must say it feels great knowing that we don't have to worry about anything holding us back from beginning the next chapter of our adventure.

Would we do it again? We would, for sure, but next time we would be investing time reading up on everything and researching all we can before we buy! It was just a case of finding something suitable very quickly when we were first looking but we both agree we should have read up on the facts about buying and selling a vehicle in Aus first.

You might remember in the last post about working at Georg Jensen that I was going on a work night out again where I had told myself I wasn't going to drink to much or worse, mix my drinks.
Well that didn't exactly go to plan. After drinking vodka double blacks, shots of tequila and champagne in the store, then eating roasted crickets at a Mexican, I found myself throwing up in a toilet in what looked to be a trendy bar overlooking the beach. I really embarrassed myself that night so let that be a lesson to me.

Tom has been working a lot recently. Not only has been lucky enough to have extended his contract he's managed to get really good hours too. Plenty of weekend shifts so higher pay. He is earning a small fortune and saving up loads of $ so good for him.

With my spare time I've been spending a lot of it at Centennial park - Sydney's largest suburban parkland area. Mainly because it is peaceful, naturally beautiful and doesn't cost anything. It's nice to chill out and go for a walk or a run anytime of the day. The parklands are so vast and theres lots of paths and trails to explore. I fall in love with it a little more each time I go. All my decent pictures of it are on my DSLR as is always the case with the pictures I have been capturing.

Recently I went on a little walk to try and find some of the filming spots they used to shoot parts of the Great Gatsby movie. I love that film and now I know 95% of it was shot in Sydney rather than NY I love it even more. They used quite a lot of the parklands for various scenes and much of the film was actually shot in Fox Studios (just across the road from the park) where they built the sets.
Gatsbys funeral scene was shot at Waverley Cemetary which, like the park, is 5 mins away from our flat and overlooks the sea from the famous coastal path walk.

Centennial Park is very much a people's park but it also prides itself on supporting the Australian film industry. It offers itself as a filming location to many directors for all sorts of films and many have requested permission to shoot there.

They are actually preparing to shoot another big film there now. They've cordoned off quite a generous chunk of part of the park and looks like they are going to be building temporary structure of there to shoot around - like they did on the Great Gatsby.
I asked the security guy if he knew what film it was but he said they never tell him anything until the actors show up.
Quite a long way to go yet. I very much doubt ill see the set finished before we head off to the ranch course. It's all very interesting though!

Sketching some ideas down on a sunny afternoon. I miss architecture and design quite a lot sometimes. Always keep getting ideas so need to record them. I keep meaning to go a do some sketches of some buildings I've seen in the city.

SURFING!

Well finally! We managed to sort out a day to take the board down to Makenzies Bay on the coastal path! Its been so long since we've had chance to have a proper surf. Just shy of six months since we started learning how to surf back at Surf Camp so needless to say we were a little rusty. However, despite the rough conditions and lack of practice we both managed to stand up and ride at couple of waves in from the back which wasn't a bad effort when considering.

Here's me with 5 bucks I found floating in the sea whilst paddling out. Can't do that back in England! Although I hear the government are following the lead of countries like Australia and in 2016 will be printing plastic/waterproof banknotes.

Within 10 minutes of getting into the water Tom had got caught out by a wave and had been washed up on some (thankfully) smooth faced rocks which he literally slid across before hitting a large boulder. Luckily there was no significant damage to the board! ...
Haha... and Tom of course...Haha he got away with some bruised ribs and a grazed foot fortunately.

Last week I managed to bag four shifts at Gerog Jensen in Chatswood (that's north Sydney) and two of them were Saturday and Sunday which was good (for the extra $).
I've been lucky enough that the people at that store have such busy social lives that they have often been asking me to cover for them which has been ideal since my contracted hours came to an end at Georg Jensen Bondi in mid January and its been tough having to not spend as much.
The differences between the two stores have made going to Chatswood seem rather dull and stressful but I can't really complain as its money well needed at the end of the day. Plus the commute to the store involves take the train or e bus over the iconic iron monster which is the Sydney Harbour Bridge which is not a bad journey to go on anytime of the day!

Thursday was probably my last shift at Georg Jensen. We've only got one more week left here in sydney before the ranch course. It was a nice laid back one to finish luckily. Oh and I stupidly left my phone in a taxi on Wednesday evening while out with Peter and the girls from Bondi so they can't contact really me for any more shifts anyway.
I'm phoning the cab company on monday morning hoping that my faith in mankind will be retained if the driver has took it back with him and put it in lost property. Otherwise ill have to fork out for a new handset which will really annoy me. Fingers crossed they have it. I would have rang sooner but had to go to Optus and find out e manufacturing number which is how they identify it apparently.

Recently I've been going on a few nights out with Tom and a few of his work friends which has been nice.
We went to a place called Watsons Bay the other day after sampling the weird and wonderful flavours from probably Sydney's best ice cream parlour Messina. Considering I'm not that bothered by ice cream and usually microwave it slightly before eating it, it was actually pretty nice. So you know it's good! I had a scoop combo of apple and caramel pie and almond croissant!
At Watsons Bay we chilled on a little beach tucked away round by the headland below a part of the national park and had a dip in the sea with the shining lights of the City skyline in the background shimmering on the water. It was so peaceful and such an incredible view whilst still being cosy and private.

One of Toms friends is a gay guy called Kristian. One night we went for drinks in the city and he persuaded us and some others to go to this gay bar. Reluctant at first, we thought whats the worst that could happen. This guy is such a laugh and is full of life and energy, it will be fun. Plus it was a few days until Mardi Gras so there are going to be loads of places packed out with men who are as camp as a field of tents anyway.

Well to cut a long story short, yes we did have a fun, eventful and utterly hilarious time...but... at a cost as you might of guessed. Thankfully with Tom being the better looking one out of the two of us he was getting the most attention from, ahem, other men while I just stood there and laughed uncontrolobly. It was one of the few times I wasn't slightly envious of his abs.
Kristian would frequently call over anyone and everyone he fancied and lift up Toms shirt and say "look, have a feel." Within the hour he'd been kissed, fondled, but-pinched, hugged and groped by all sorts of people including a horny 50 something old woman and a gay man dressed entirely as a priest. (There's a photo of that on his Facebook if you fancy a laugh but for your convenience I've included it below). Yes his masculinity had truly been violated and thank god he held it together and managed to laugh it off with his trademark smile instead of beating the crap out of anyone who touched him or invaded his personal space.

One thing that made me laugh was when Kristian called over a tall and butch cross dresser who had just performed an alarming rendition of "I Will Survive" and asked 'her' who looked the campest out of Tom and I. Haha you should of seen Tom's face!
Unfortunately I didn't escape without some unwanted male attention either and had to redirect Kristian many a time as his dancing and thrusting got rather out of hand when he kept trying to come on to me.

I didn't get away with pulling that face as you can see below

The two guys you can just about see behind us would not stop looking at me and Tom all night.
It was a strange and twisted eye-opener in the sense that I now know and can relate to how uncomfortable and frankly annoyed girls get when they go out to a bar or club and have to deal with the constant and unwanted attention of hopeful blokes who won't leave them alone. It's not nice at all and I sympathise with you, girls.

The picture above was taken shortly after I'd just spotted (of all people) Gok Wan at the bar with two friends and a beefy bodyguard. Should have had a camp picture with him as well but he left shortly after. I did say hey to him on the way out and he smiled and said hi back. After all, you can't help but be fascinated by watching a famous person from tv from literally across the room. Even if you are sat in a gay bar surrounded by pervy men.

Selling luxury jewellery at Georg Jensen

- What is the clarity of the diamond in that ring?
- Are the pearls in this necklace cultured?
- How much will it cost to get my wedding ring re-rhodium plated?
- How precious is orange calcedony?
- Why does this necklace look tarnished already?
- How many years will it take before I notice distinguished signs of oxidisation?
- I need to buy my girlfriend/fiancé/wife a last minute birthday present. I have $300. What should I get?
- I need to buy my wife an anniversary gift. Money is no object. What can you suggest?
- Ive been a loyal customer for more than 20 years. Why don't Georg Jensen do a discount?
- I should probably get my wife a push present. Do you have anything cheap but nice?
- I've never seen these type of earrings before - how do you put them on?

These are a selection of questions I have been asked while working as a Christmas casual at Georg Jensen in Westfield Bondi Junction. Obviously it was a short term position but even so, there was actually no formal or proper training in jewellery given beforehand. What I wanted to know I had to read or research online. If it werent for my manager being a laid back pommie I probably wouldnt have even got the job; I have such little retail experience, let alone a background in high end jewellery sales.
So whilst trying to uphold the quality and professionalism of the boutique brand that it is, some of the questions I have listed I have been able to answer in full confidence, while some I have blagged completely. Some I have made up a convincing answer with little truth and others I have just stared blankly at the customer/jewellery just trying to think of a plausible answer.

It was really a case of being thrown in at the deep end with this one. But it was a job nonetheless and a good job to write on the CV!
I was having to pick up things very quickly while watching how the others dealt with things. It was hard learning that way as there was so still so much I didn't know about. I was asking questions for the first two weeks about anything and everything until I slowly started to feel more confident.
In time, I smashed my sales target (albeit a tame one) by double in the first month, making about $25k while earning a little commission too!

The best thing about working there were the team - a close knit one of the most diverse personalities you could pick out of a hat. Peter, the manager, very new to the company himself having just moved from a different jewellery brand 3 months before, is a 30 something married bloke from Lancashire who emigrated and settled here a few years ago with his wife and they now have two kids. He's extremely intelligent (but doesn't like to show it) but also he's still a proper young lad deep down. With a very rude and sometimes disturbing mind he can make anything a laugh and is very chilled out and easy going. And you need a manager like that in this industry, trust me!

Marina is assistant manager and one of the most loveliest girls I've ever met. She moved over from Russia in her early twenties and as well as being so kind and lovely, she is stunningly beautiful. She used to be a model back in Russia and has the cutest little accent. She's a few years older than me  unfortunately and so would no doubt prefer the bronzed, gym-frequenting Aussie hunks that parade round bondi in their little swimmers.

Garth is a casual employee but has been with the company for about 5 years now. There's nothing he doesn't know or can't tell you about Gerog Jensen. Same goes with a lot of other things as well... Or so he would argue. He really has had a rich upbringing and so many interesting and crazy life experiences. He is always telling stories and anecdotes with the rare ability to make the most boring ones sound interesting or hilarious . A proud gay man of 41 I think, he always has his strong view and opinion on everything. Not afraid to argue, assert his presence or even reveal the disturbing details of debaucherous accounts during his mid-twenties. Underneath all the gay bravado, the bitchiness, the lypo and facial surgery, the rich and wealthy businessman boyfriend in America, he is actually a very kind and thoughtful man, as most gay men are. A big softie at heart, but won't let you know it.

Emma and Camille are two young Aussie casuals who are both lovely and have different personalities. Emma has finished a uni degree in fashion design and will be looking formal graduate job soon like me. She is really nice and quite funny in her own way. She has the Aussie surfer dude boyfriend (lucky guy) and is dead easygoing.
Camille is just about to start uni in arts and law I think so she will be moving on pretty soon. She is very confident and despite being quite young, not afraid to let you know what she thinks if she doesnt agree with something. Which is a good thing, but it did reveal a fair bit of immaturity sometimes. She's fun to get along with and have a good laugh at things. I think she thinks she's a lot older and experienced than she actually is, which has made things difficult for Peter sometimes.

So that's the team! They've been great to work with and have really made what could have been a drab, dull sales job really fun and easygoing, so I've been really lucky to work there. Ironically, out of all the places I dropped my CV off at, this was the one place I thought I didn't stand a chance in. We actually waited outside the store wondering if it was worth it or not!
And now Tom and I each have a sleek new watch to wear, which I got a killer discount on. Oh yes!

Weird Georg Jensen Fact:
One of my customers was so obsessed with the brand that she named her child Jensen.

It has a lot of loyal customers, some of which are snotty upperclass airheads while others are kind thoughtful and very respectful.

Disturbing Georg Jensen Fact:
Witnessed a woman arguing and getting very defensive after being called "Mrs". She insisted she be called "Doctor" when being addressed, in the snottiest rudest tone ever.

Its been a fairly balanced ratio (in the time I worked there) between horrible customers and polite customers, but that's retail for you, as they say.

Hilarious Georg Jensen Fact:
Had a woman come in to the store asking me if I'd like a psychic reading in exchange for some jewellery. She was completly dolalley. She started going off on one about how I am "the sun" and have the all the energy in the universe to achieve eternal happiness. I played along and said I don't own the shop so I couldn't give her any jewellery, to which she apparently bestowed on me the gift of light and said "with this power, you will own the company in two weeks and then I will return".
She never did. In fact after she left the shop, I saw her go next door to Tiffanys.

Heres me with Peter, Marina and Garth. Camille doesn't like pictures and Emma wasn't there that day unfortunately.
I know what you're thinking.. I haven't shrillived down in height with all this extra sun...they are just a very tall bunch!

Shortly after this, Peter finished his shift and suggested me and him go for a quick drink at the pub. This actually turned into 6 drinks accompanied by some hilarious banter and comparisons between Australia and England. I opted for a beer called Pure Blonde (which I'd heard was quite nice) and seemed to get drunk extremely quickly. I put this down to being off my game a bit, having not been out for a big drinking session for a while but after we'd finished and I found myself swaying down the isles of the supermarket trying to remember what I needed for tea then wandering all over the pavement on the way back home I knew something was not quite right. I subsequently found out, after collapsing in the bed while Tom googled the offending beer, that it was a carb-free variety so the alcohol was so much more pure (hence the name). And it had hit me like a tonne of bricks! I don't think I've ever been that drunk during the day, especially out in public. Must have looked a right state.

We've organised another night out this evening which should be a good laugh but I've told myself I am most definitely not mixing my drinks like I did the last time. I did wonder if it was all worth it when I was straining my back and stomach which my head down the dunny the next day.

Typical day in the back room of the store.

Little memento to remember my time there :)

Update and New Flat Pictures

So we've been living in our new place for a while now but here are some images of the flat. It's about a 10 minute walk to Bondi Junction so a lot closer to everything but slightly more expensive and definitely not as nice as our previous place. But hey, we did well to find a place like this so quick and its pretty cheap for the area.

We will be living here now until we head in to the outback to do a ranch training course which we booked recently. Will be an exciting change and an opportunity to see the 'real' Australia. The course teaches you all the skills you need to work as a jackaroo or station hand on an outback farm or cattle ranch. A job is usually offered at the end of the course if you do well so we will hopefully be able to commence our regional work! And working on a cattle ranch will be much more interesting than picking fruit for 88 days!

So lately I've had a lot of free time on my hands as my Christmas casual contract has long come to an end. I asked my manager to keep my contract rolling and I've been covering a few shifts for staff at different stores around Sydney but they are few and far between and I'm not earning anything near what I'd like to be. Have tried looking around for other temp work but theres not much about this time of year obviously and anything that is gets snapped up within a few days. It's difficult as well cause there'd be not much point starting a new job when we are moving on in 4 weeks.
Tom has been lucky and has managed to get his contract extended until he leaves and he is raking it in! Plenty of weekend shifts and good hours through the week, albeit he's almost permanently shattered!

I've been trying to make the most of my free time (on a budget) and I've been doing lots of running and walking around the beautiful parks and beaches, exploring the suburbs and of course roaming the city, soaking up the culture, taking photographs and looking for nice architecture amongst other interesting stuff. Just wish I was working a bit more so I could justify spending a bit more instead of being stingy with the money.
It wouldn't be so bad if we could finally sell our van and release the money we have tied up in her. But we've got to wait to hear back from the department of transport about a few things before we can actually hand it over to a buyer. Which is frustrating as we've had a few people interested and wanting to view it over the past few days! Fingers crossed we can sell her in plenty of time before we have to move on from here otherwise I don't know what we'll do.

Anyway I'll try keep things on here updated in the run up to venturing off to do the outback ranch course. Still waiting on the wifi to be fixed in the flat so I have to go to the library etc for Internet which is not ideal.

Here's some pics of our current abode... We share it with lots of other little flatmates like this one here which I accidentally stood on whilst walking barefoot in the dark. #crunch

That large fridge is not working btw. We haven't just left the doors open for show

It's a fairly simple shop-top unit with tall ceilings and a narrow hallway. Pretty much a terrace layout.

Most Aussie residences are typically Art Deco such was the era they were built

We have a big room, thankfully with two large doors to let the breeze in!

Look who's asleep again!

And we've been lucky to have walk in showers in both of our places so far.

Nice little balcony
